Many thanks to all players who took part and played the match with great spirit but still played competitively ( as it should be).My personal thanks to Keith Sawden who has agreed to help with the Juniors and on his first event offered to play with Junior captain Jake Taylor as we were one player short . Keith don’t take offence but we won’t be asking you again on a number of fronts , firstly you don’t look the part and secondly you managed to lose your match, seriously though many thanks for agreeing to help out. Thank you to Rabbits Captain Graham Cracknell for helping organise the Rabbits team and for providing refreshment and a buffet afterwards it really is appreciated by the Juniors. The result, the Rabbits came out winners in a closely fought match, well done.

England Golf Merger Approved

http://www.selbygolfclub.co.uk/news/newsview/497/

The merger of the English Golf Union (EGU) and the English Women’s Golf Association (EWGA) was approved today (16 November 2011) at simultaneous general meetings of both organisations.

The merger will come into effect on 1 January 2012 and will create England Golf, one national governing body to represent all amateur golfers in England.

The merger proposal was approved by 86 per cent of the voting members of the EGU, meeting at its headquarters in Woodhall Spa; and by 100 per cent of the voting members of the EWGA, meeting at the National Motor Cycle Museum at Solihull. Both organisations had to approve the proposal by a majority of at least 75 per cent for it to be successful.

The decision was immediately hailed as a triumph for golf and a vital step forward for the game. Nigel Evans, Chairman EGU and Sylvia Perrins, Interim Chairman EWGA said: “This merger is in the best interests of golf and we are delighted that it has been given overwhelming support by our members. We look forward to a new era and to realising our vision for the future.

“England Golf will speak with one voice and send out the powerful, modern message that golf is a game for all, for men and women, boys and girls.

“A unified organisation, which promotes both the men’s and women’s game, will be more attractive to new golfers, will help us to grow the game, will be more appealing to commercial partners and sponsors and will mean we can be more cost effective.”

The merger vote followed a long period of consultation and preparation, which began in 2009 when a steering group was formed of members of both organisations. Following lengthy discussions, and the involvement of ten working groups, the proposal was produced and ratified by the Boards of both organisations before being put to the voting members.

Key points of the merger

The headquarters of England Golf will initially be at the National Golf Centre at Woodhall Spa. The EWGA offices in Edgbaston will continue in use until at least October 2012.

The counties will continue to be the voting members. Counties will be encouraged to merge their Unions and Associations, but this will not be mandatory.

The Board of England Golf will initially include 10 stakeholder non-executive directors, six nominated by the EGU and four women nominated by the EWGA. One of these 10 will be nominated as Chairman.

The first sole President of England Golf will be a woman. The President will be supported by the immediate Past President and the President-Elect. One of these three will always be a woman.

Club golf will go on, from day-to-day, as it does now, but members will benefit from the positive perceptions created by the merger and by the better support available for clubs.

All the championships and tournaments currently run by the EWGA and the EGU will continue.

The regional and group structures of the two organisations will continue to run competitions. The decision-making role of the EWGA regional committees will end.

Affiliation fees for men and women will be harmonised and will be equal by 1 January 2014. Women will continue to pay an additional subscription to the Ladies Golf Union.

Faldo Series - Lough Erne

http://www.selbygolfclub.co.uk/news/newsview/444/

Ellie Goodall played in this event - here is a write up from Janis.

Hi all

What a fantastic place Lough Erne was, apart from the weather.

It was a very tough course, we said it was the best one we had ever seen. Boys were playing off blue tees and girls off yellow and whites, the conditions made it even harder during the first two days as we had the tail end of Hurricane Katia.

After day one Ellie shot 80 which was 8 over but the par was 72 for everyone, this comp did not count for handicap purposes and the sss and css were not calculated. Ellie was in joint 2nd place in the under 16girls after the first round. The average score for the day was 85 we were told and one poor lad shot 33 over. I don't think that anyone not there could understand how bad the weather was. Balls were moving on the greens and it still went ahead.

After all three rounds Ellie finished 5th in the Under 16 girls and 37th overall out of 77 boys and girls up to 21 years of age. The experience was really good for her and they also had the pressure of SKY Sports cameras on several of the greens.

I am attaching a few photos so you can see how gorgeous the place was.

We were told that the programme will be broadcast on Sky Sports on either the 1st or 2nd of October but if we hear any different will let you know.

bye for now

Janis

ps . I could wake up to that view every morning!

Dear Members

I would like to thank you all for the very generous donation I received on Friday evening. What can I say, it is a very kind gesture and surprise. It will be spent wisely!

I said in my speech a special thank you must go to Julie Rae and the late Carol Cooper, who were very supportive to me during my early days at Selby. Julie has remained my "rock" ever since.

A big thank you must also go to the "Goolies". You all know who you are! Always supportive encouraging me and making me very welcome. Thanks Lads.

Very early on when I first started playing golf at 13, going to America on a scholarship seemed a very appealing thing to do. But was something all the better players did, not something a 13 year old girl from Goole playing off 36 handicap, hitting it in the trees and bunkers all the time would ever achieve. But having had encouragement from lots of members, especially in those early days, when a tap on the window at the first tee after just reaching the fairway, always put a smile on my face, and made me want to be a better player.

They say if you want something that much, you can have it. Well not without hard work and many hours of practise, sometimes lonely, but always enjoyable.

Well 5 years later here I am going to America . Selby Golf Club has played a massive part in my success and for that I thank you all.

I leave for Daytona on Friday 12 August, and move into my apartment on the 24th, then orientation on 25th and 26th.

My first tournament is at the LPGA International Golf Club on September 24th and 25th, I will let everyone know how it goes!

I must not of course forget my mum and dad for all their support throughtout the last five years without them none of this would be possible. May be now my dad can start playing golf again.

Thanks to Phyliss and Gary for all your support and kindness.

Good luck to Ellie and Hannah Goodall in the coming years. Well done to Ellie on representing England , a fantastic achievement.

I return home for Christmas on 17 December returning to Daytona on 17 January, so I will be back at Selby to see everyone.

Once again thank you, I really do appreciate it.

Selby Juniors played a very strong Howley team on Tuesday evening. James Sykes lead the team out playing a 6 handicapper, receiving 2 shots James struggled on the night with his driver usually his strong point and was beaten 6&5.Tom Coultish was out second receiving 4 shots, going quickly 3 down Tom then showed his fighting spirit to draw level only for his opponent to have a run of pars and win 4&2. Hannah Goodall completed the team line-up receiving 2 shots off a boy playing off 11( who receives Yorkshire coaching) , there was never much in this match which with a little luck exiting a bunker on the 17th Hannah would have won but eventually halved earning the only point on the night. Jake Taylor tuned out as reserve . Thank you all for your efforts.

The final score 5-1 to Howley Hall.

Scratch Team Result Selby 1 - 5 Low Laithes

http://www.selbygolfclub.co.uk/news/newsview/384/

The scratch team's promotion hopes were dealt a blow last night as they went down to the league leaders.

First up was Robbie Wardle who was up against the reigning Auchterlonie Spoon champion Richard Laws, Rob started well and after 14 holes held a 2up advantage, unfortunately he was pegged back after his opponent made a birdie at the last to square the match.

Next up was Anthony Dobson who was up against Scott Hartley, Anthony battled hard against tough opposition and after going 4 down at the turn showed all his battling qualities reducing the deficit to only 1 after 16, only for his opponent to make a 2 at 17 to seal a 2&1 victory for his side.

Next up was our team captain Chris Ramsey up against Robert Edson, Rambo struggled to find his best consistent form and the match was very tight with only ever 1 hole in it, when they reached the eighteenth Rambo needed to win the hole to square the match but after they halved the hole in birdies the match was lost 1 down.

Thanks to tonights caddies Ken Barrett, Barry Townend and Frank Farmer.

Thanks also to Richard Taylor of Keith Taylor Estate Agents for sponsoring tonights match and also to the fantastic support we recieved from the Selby members.

Heritage Trophy Match Report

http://www.selbygolfclub.co.uk/news/newsview/368/

Selby take the Heritage Trophy against Garforth at the first attempt.

A strong Selby side came out well on top in this 24 a side team match. Professional Nick and I enjoyed a win, Nick doing the bulk of the work as he shot a 65 in a bogey free round carding no less than 6 birdies.

The match format for this home and away fixture was 18 hole BB matchplay with all the games played out to the end, the team with the highest aggregate score being declared the winners. Selby had a slight advantage from the away fixture being 8 holes to the good going into our home match. Yesterday saw us win by 22 holes giving us a 30 hole winning margin over the two legs!

As ever the course was in superb condition and drew much sincere praise from our visitors, Neil and Ann provided a magnificent post match meal which was also given high accolades by all participants, in total 45 players ate and all gave a very enthusiastic thumbs up. Mandy and John ensured we were all well watered too on a very hot day.

Although this match is essentially a social match given the friendly rivalry the two clubs have it was very nice to come out on top.

Well done team Selby and many thanks to all who took part.

Match Report Juniors v Garforth

http://www.selbygolfclub.co.uk/news/newsview/366/

Selby Set sights on top of the table

Selby continued their superb run of form to secure a 4-2 win over Garforth. Selby are now at the top half of the table, in third position and are now looking to progress even further up the table.

First on the tee was Selby’s Jake Taylor against Garforth’s Sam Tudor. Jake has not been playing for the juniors for a while, but with the consistent play on the first couple of holes you couldn’t tell. However Sam Tudor soon turned up the heat and before Jake knew it he was 4 down at the thirteenth, his opponent being 3 under par through 12 holes. Jake unfortunately lost on the 14th with a scorline of 5&4.

The next match was contested by Selby’s Junior Captain Alfie Griffiths and Garforth’s Matthew Burril. Alfie looked good through the first few holes and it looked like the two week break had helped him. Alfie continued this good play, winning the next few holes. After sinking two 20ft birdie putts on the 12th and 13th consecutively, his win was virtually guaranteed. Alfie eventually won 3&2.

The last pairing out were Selby’s Hannah Goodall and Garforth’s Laura Morrison. This match was hyped up to be the closest match, due to both of these girls being the same handicap of 12. Hannah started well and won 3 of here opening 5 holes. Hannah’s steady play was the key to the rest of the round. However Laura Morrison started coming back into it on the last few holes, doing just enough to take the game down the 18th, but Hannah was too good for her down the last and she eventually won 2up

In reserve was Kieran Turnbull and Tom Coultish of Selby against Garforth’s Jake Ward and Tom Crosvil. This was Kieran’s first game for the junior team and he was looking to impress. He did just this on the par three 5th when his tee shot rolled just to the side of the pin. This match never looked in doubt with Kieran and Tom dominating and eventually winning 7&6.

An extra thank you to tonight’s ball sponsor Alan Wilson. Selby Juniors next game will be away at Headingly next Tuesday.

Nett Team Result Horsforth 4 - 2 Selby

http://www.selbygolfclub.co.uk/news/newsview/361/

Selby visited Horsforth for this weeks away fixture on a very hot and humid evening. The team, comprising of Richard Penistone, Mark Webster and Ryan Crawley were hoping to continue the teams winning form and come away from an away match with some points - a difficult task in any circumstances.

Richard Penistone was first out and played some very controlled golf through the first 9 holes, with not much between the two players. However on the back 9 Richard took his game up a gear birdying 3 of the first four back nine holes to cement a great 4 & 3 victory over a talented and very experienced opponent.

Ryan, playing second had a tough match working hard throughout but coming from 2 down to level the game only to lose by 1 hole down the last

Mark Webster was the anchor man for the team, his game being delayed 45 minutes as his opponent was stuck in traffic. His game was against a tough and once again experienced opponent, the game being fought hard Mark coming from 2 down with a great up and down par on the 17th to level the game only to lose the match by 1 hole on the last

Selby must take positives from this result losing 4-2, taking 2 points away from home to reinforce our league placing

A big thank you must go firstly to the players for their efforts, the caddies for their support on such a hot evening and once again Mr Vice - John Hurrion for his much appreciated support

Thanks also to last nights ball sponsor Dave Shaw - many thanks

The Nett Team has no game next week so we will have to sit and see how the other teams perform, particularly Wakefield who are pressing us hard

Many thanks, Mark & Graham

Scratch Team Result Leeds GC 0 - 6 Selby GC

http://www.selbygolfclub.co.uk/news/newsview/360/

Great night as we took all six points on a difficult warm evening in Leeds.

First up was Kav Smith, he and his opponent struggled to find any early form and halved four of the first five holes with bogies, his opponent then had back to back birdies at 6 and 7 to turn 3up, and as they went through 13 holes he still held his 3 hole advantage

And as we all know its difficult to sometimes get over the finish line and it proved so again as he hit a series of poor shots and lost all the remaining holes to solid pars and a near hole in one at the last for a 2up victory.

Next up was our team captain Chris Ramsey, Rambo continued his fine form from our cup win on Saturday and claimed a hard fought match 3&1 with a birdie at 17.

Last out tonight was Ashley Simpson who again showed great form shooting 6 birdies on a difficult night to defeat his man 4&2.

Thanks to the ever present caddies of Ian Simpson and Frank Farmer who did a great job on a warm difficult evening, and the support we recieved from the Selby members.

Thankyou to our Club Captain Gary Emerson for sponsoring tonight's match.

No match next week 04/07

Knock-Out Result Selby 4 - 2 Moor Allerton

http://www.selbygolfclub.co.uk/news/newsview/352/

A superb win against a strong Moor Allerton side see us progress through to the semi finals of the LDUGC Scratch KO.

First out again was Kav Smith who played well but unfortunately had one of those days on the greens and went down 2&1. Next out was our team captain Chris Ramsey, Rambo got back to winning ways in fine style by playing some great golf!, when he sealed his 4&2 win he was -2. Anchoring the team was Ashley Simpson, Ash is a real solid dependable performer for us this year and today was no exception. After going 1 down early in his match he then reeled off six holes in a row to take control of his match and came through with a 4&3 victory and by doing so sealed our semi final spot.

Thanks to the caddies today Ian Simpson & Mark Smith and also to Neil who stayed on to provide us with a meal.

Nett Team Result Selby 6 - 0 Garforth

http://www.selbygolfclub.co.uk/news/newsview/347/

The Nett Team entertained Garforth in a home fixture last night and i am delighted to say kept up the teams momentum with a 6-0 crushing of Garforth.

The team of Chris Livsey, Mark Webster and Ryan Crawley all had convincing victories over their Garforth opponenets - all winning their games by 5&4.

This was Chris Livsey's first outing this season for the team and he certainly came up with the goods defeating a young and ambitous Sam Tudor(3), Chris playing in his renowned calm, masterful style, pressurising his young opponent at every opportunity, with some first rate play to see Sam's challenge slowly fading under the pressure. Both Mark and Ryan continued their fine vein of league form performing what can only be described as a demolition job of their respective opponenents, to seal a great team victory.

A big thank you must go to the players and also the caddies who were very influencial and supportive of their players - something that was evidently lacking for the Garforth players. Thank you to all spectators and both Mr Captain Gary and Mr Vice John our ever present supply of team snacks.

A big thank you must go to Gordon and his team for presenting, yet again a first class golf course that all Selby members can be truly proud of. Thanks to the caterers for a lovely post match meal and our apologies for stirring you guys into action earlier than planned - but I must say I hope this becomes the norm!

Next week sees the team visit Horsforth and barring injury the team will remain unchanged. It would be great to come away from a tough Horsforth fixture with points and the way the team is performing and the team spirit that is evident throughout the squad should make this a realistic objective

Keep up the good work everyone - it feels great

Many thanks
